SWCD Degrees and Certificates
The programs included in the following section are only for those students enrolled at SouthWest College for the Deaf. Based on state law, hearing students cannot enroll at SWCD unless it is educationally appropriate or in special programs needed to train hearing and deaf persons to become professional service providers for the deaf.
SWCD ESOL Program
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program at SWCD is designed to provide language instruction and support to students whose first language is not English so that they can succeed in accomplishing their educational goals at SWCD. New students will receive an ESOL Waiver (TAC 19, Part 1, Ch. 4C(c)). This waiver is effective for the student’s first long semester (up to 15 semester hours) at SWCD. New students will be administered the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) test for appropriate placement. A sequence of courses has been designed to support student learning in reading, English grammar, writing, and American Sign Language (ASL). Students completing the ESOL Program are then placed in developmental course work or credit-bearing course work.
